Healthy Eating – Meaning?

What does healthy eating actually mean? What springs to mind when you hear the phrase? It has a different meaning to pretty much everyone. Some may think ‘clean eating’, for others it could simply mean a plate of green food, you might conjure up that weird person at work who drinks pond water every morning!

There’s no right or wrong answer to this, but at Working Workout, we believe that healthy eating should be summed up in one word – balance.

What is balance?

It’s just as important to eat wholesome, nutritious food as it is to actually enjoy the food we eat (and what we drink). Healthy eating for most people means one thing: the restriction or limitation of the foods we eat; it doesn’t have to be this way! For the majority of people, limiting what food you eat won’t make you happy, but there is an alternative.

Now, a bit more on the whole balance thing. We eat food every day so it’s a part of our lifestyle. ‘Healthy eating’ can just be a lifestyle shift. We’re not recommending you just eat steamed vegetables, or cut out dairy from your diet, or stop eating sugar – yes, stop correcting “I’ve” heard things like this before. That is not wise unless you happen to be lactose intolerant, or can’t tolerate other weird and wonderful things – but rather you make a few positive changes whilst still eating the foods you love and always have. As Victoria’s Secret model Gigi Hadid recently, so usefully, said: ‘Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane’, preach it sister!

So what is a diet?

When we use the word diet, we are just talking about the food you eat on a daily basis, rather than what most people might associate that word with e.g. I’m on a diet. Everyone is on a diet, some peoples are just healthier than others. We want people to have balanced diets, ones that make them feel good, not ones that are based on limitation. We want you to eat a range of different foods that are not only good for you, but add a bit of variety.

In terms of weight/size, in very simplistic terms (and there are many factors that come into this equation), if the input (i.e. what you’re putting in your body) is greater than the output (i.e. the energy you use like walking to work or going on a run or at the gym), then you will put on weight/size. The other way round is slightly more complicated and we will go into this in a future post, but if your output is slightly greater than your input (e.g. by 100 or so calories), then you are going to lose weight/size nice and gradually.

So this week, maybe add a few things into your diet that you haven’t tried before and maybe have a bit less of a few things you know you have too much of which aren’t so great for you. Enjoy what you eat, and remember, above all, to have balance in your diet.
